Hello all! I am Benjamin Poirier and I am the VISTA at Pinckney Community Schools. As the Service Learning Coordinator, I am responsible for the five schools in Pinckney that range from K-12. My office is in the 7th-8th grade building. Pinckney is a wonderful district to be serving in—the educational program really is top-notch and working with the teachers here is a privilege.
My start at Pinckney was pretty hectic. Until recently, I have not been in their computer system due to a delay – the tech department’s first priority was distributing laptops to all of their students (I told you they’re top notch!). Since then, my experiences have been great! School started just before the 9/11 Day of Service, so projects for that day tended to be quick and jump starters to future projects. I helped coordinate multiple classrooms in the Pathfinder School that made “I Will” posters demonstrating the changes they want to make this year. These posters are displayed throughout the school’s halls.
I have made some progress toward completing my VAD, including attending professional development opportunities and showing teachers how to navigate the Learning-to-Give website. That website has been a huge resource for me already! Also, I made a survey ascertaining the community needs. I have sent it to each school every week. My goal is to have at least 100 responses, (but 75-80 will work for me) —I currently have fifty. From those responses, I have reached out to teachers and have started planning a few projects that involve a teen center, school store, and more. I might even have one that incorporates Spanish and U.S. History with a previous Pinckney VISTA who is currently serving with the Peace Corps in Paraguay. I’m very excited about this! And, on top of all this, I started to volunteer with the Pinckney High School football team!
The biggest challenge I have been finding throughout my first month here is truly getting into contact and organizing meetings with everyone I can. With it being the start of the school year, some of the teachers and community partners have told me to contact them later on in the year which may work to my advantage. I’m loving every minute of this experience, and I can’t wait to hear from the rest of you and see you all!
