Hello! My name is Alexa Girouard and I am serving in Grand Rapids, Michigan at Davenport University. I am working on College Access & Success at Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) and Student Engagement as Davenport’s Volunteer Center Coordinator. My VISTA experience so far has already taught me so many things, and I feel myself learning something new about myself and my community every day!
A big event I have been working on at Davenport is coming up next week, called Week Without Violence, and I am very excited about it. It is a combination of things I am passionate about and the goals of student engagement and community awareness on my VAD. It is a week-long event that has a different theme for each day around a social issue in the Grand Rapids community and the Davenport community. I am avid about social change and teaching students about what that means. I think when students learn more about what is happening in their own community, it will prompt them to be more engaged.
Next week on October 21st is Make a Difference Day, a national day of service that I have been planning for a few months now. I have many students and staff who are volunteering, so I am optimistic this event will leave a great impact. With GRPS, I have been working with Union High School on college access by helping with Michigan College application week and going on tours of college campuses with students. I have been working with the Harrison Park on pre-college courses and I have been involved in after-school activities. With Westwood middle school, I am planning something called “Lunch & Learns” to take place in the College and Career Café, and we will have a speaker or college and career related activity to event for students to participate in during their lunch time.
I am very excited to see what the rest of the year brings!
