Hola! I’m Anita and I am a First Year VISTA serving with The LEAGUE MI (TLM) in Grand Rapids, MI. TLM falls under the civic engagement branch at the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA). I serve Grand Rapids Public Schools as a service-learning resource for teachers. That means I help and support teachers to implement service-learning and philanthropy education into their classroom curriculums.
I serve out of North Park Montessori but I visit and plan service-learning projects with teachers from schools all around Grand Rapids. I am really excited to be working with a teacher at Martin Luther King Leadership Academy that will be starting a Bullying Awareness Month at his school. He plans to have his fourth grade class do a project for each week of the month. He plans to do a neighborhood campaign where he and his students go out into the community, neighborhoods and local businesses, to promote the idea of community and for us all to be accountable in making our schools and neighborhood safe from bullying. I really like this project because I get to help build relationships between local businesses and this school.
My year of service will be complete in February and I’ve been mapping out my plans for after AmeriCorps. I feel prepared and excited because of all the skills and accomplishments I achieved during my VISTA year. I learned how to do grant writing through a VISTA Blend online course and had real chances to write grants during my service. I also got to network and create relationships with many educators, community members, and local businesses and organizations. So happy to have the opportunity to serve with MNA in Grand Rapids!
