Hi, I’m Branden Dyer, a first-year MNA CE AmeriCorps VISTA serving at Oakland University. I am continuing my work with the Oakland County Treasurer's Office on a Children's Savings Accounts program. I have received positive feedback from the community. I have a meeting with a prominent credit union in Pontiac that is very excited to learn more about the program. I am hoping to secure funding and recruit them to be the program's financial partner and create the accounts at their institution. I have met with Avondale school district superintendent and he is interested in learning more. I am waiting to schedule a meeting with the Pontiac superintendent. If I can secure a financial partner I believe I will be able to get some momentum on moving this program further.
We are finalizing plans for our ‘Grizz Night’ event in downtown Pontiac. The event's goal is to attract students to Pontiac and show off all the city has to offer. The event has been well received by the business community in the downtown and they have proved great support to us. We have ten plus businesses and organizations helping with the program along with several departments at Oakland University. The students we have talked to have liked the idea of the event. We are using OU’s social media channels to advertise the event to students and connecting with residence halls to spread the word.
On a personal note I have started a master’s degree program at Walsh College in Troy. I had my first classes this week and I am looking forward to this new challenge and experience. I am looking to pursue either a Finance degree, Information Tech degree or both. I am interested in using technology to help people and very concerned about the issues of financial inclusion and discrimination that persists in our banking system.
