Hello everyone! I’m Alissa Reeder and I am serving with the Lenawee Community Foundation in Tecumseh, MI. I feel very fortunate to serve in my hometown of Tecumseh. I have lived in Lenawee County for 22 years and it is nice to be able to give back to it. Settling into my service at the Lenawee Community Foundation seemed very effortless. I love the people I work with. I think that is a very important part of being successful in your service. Everyone at the foundation supports what I am doing with my VISTA year. I hope everyone else has that luxury.
So far these last seven months have been very busy. With the foundation, I serve half-time with the Lenawee College Access Network and half-time with Volunteer Lenawee! With LCAN lately we have been helping the students apply for scholarships. The Lenawee County Education Foundation has their own set of scholarships that students who live in the area can apply for. We assist the students however we can. There are so many scholarships available to the kids and almost all of the college bound students take advantage of it.
With Volunteer Lenawee!, I have been going to visit various agencies and non-profits to get them acclimated and show them our volunteer management software. It is called Give Gab. If anyone is looking for a way to track volunteer hours or recruit volunteers, Give Gab is a very easy way to do this. It is a social media platform. Agencies can create a page much like on Facebook and they can post their volunteer opportunities and all the details on it. People can follow their page and sign up for opportunities. It is a way for the agencies to advertise and people to easily find volunteer opportunities.
I think my favorite part of my service is working with the Lenawee YOUTH Council. LYC is a group of youth ages 12-21 from all over Lenawee County that meet twice a month and plan volunteer projects, go on college visits, grant away money, and make the community a better place. I was a member when I was younger and it is cool to be able to be an advisor now. These kids are very committed to being leaders and good role models for other people in the community. Some of the projects we have done so far are, volunteering at the Adrian Community Preschool, going to do crafts with the elderly at Provincial House in Adrian, and learned about Human Trafficking and what they can do to help. I am honored to be able to work with these young people.
My year of service is flying by and I am excited to see what the rest of the year holds. I hope that everyone is enjoying their year as well!
